Spys are like viruses. But they are not the same. Although viruses usually give damage to the system, spys aim advertising. This doesn't means that spys are harmless. They may contain a virus code and may give damage, slow down your system or may send any unwanted special information from your system.
I recommend scanning your system by SpyBot S&D once a week. I am using it for years and I am very pleased (I never recommdend Ad-Aware). Always update the software before scanning.
